Review of the Hall Walk by Oliver Thomas
This excellent walk starts from the renowned ‘Old Ferry Inn’ at Bodinnick and as luck has it, as a circular walk, it finishes there too; this is a great place to enjoy a refreshing drink after a wonderful walk.
The walk starts by walking up the (quite steep) hill away from the Old Ferry Inn and you shortly turn right at a signpost for ‘The Hall Walk’ which takes you on a fairly level walk south towards the war memorial and onwards towards Penleath Point and the Q Memorial which offers dramatic views west over to Fowey.
From here the well defined path takes you west following the creek of Pont Pill towards the lovely hamlet of Pont. This is a tidal creek, but until fairly recent years this creek was a busy harbour with an active lime kiln and harbour industry. There is still a very well preserved lime kiln on the harbour side.
From Pont it is a stiff climb up to the lovely church of Lanteglos which is well worth a visit, time permitting, it is worth noting that the path from Pont to Lanteglos can be very difficult in wet weather.
From the church follow the signs to the coast path and you will be directed to the coast path signs for Pencarrow Head, from here you will be blessed with some of the most beautiful coast path scenery in the whole of South East Cornwall.
The walk from Pencarrow Head to Polruan is of moderate difficulty but well worth the effort as it showcases the south west coast path in all its glory.
You arrive in Polruan and pass the Coastguard lookout station and St Saviours Chapel. Descend into the centre of Polruan and take the foot ferry across to Fowey (dogs allowed).
There is plenty of opportunity in Fowey to stop for refreshments on the walk through Fowey on the way back to the Bodinnick Ferry and the start point of this very well known and lovely walk.
